It's About Time

Celebrating the Fourth of July

Every year, the fourth of July inspires cookouts, pool parties, fireworks and last-minute, patriotic red, white and blue ensembles. But this year, we want to help you make your family’s Fourth extra memorable – whether you take a trip to a national park or simply watch fireworks on your living room TV.

  • Memorable holidays aren’t always about fabulous trips or expensive parties. Make this Fourth of July the best by focusing on spending fun, engaging time together as a family. Build a fire pit for your cookout. Set up a slip-and-slide backyard race. Create a float for the neighborhood parade. There are so many ways to celebrate!

  • Talk about the meaning behind the day. Whether you have a family member who serves in the army, a grandfather who fought for our freedom or a child that plays Star Spangled Banner in the band, as Americans, the Fourth of July means something special to each and every one of us. Take turns talking about our country’s history and what Independence Day means to you and your kids.

  • What’s more American than hot dogs and apple pie? What about shepherd’s pie and Tom Yum soup? This year, celebrate America’s rich diversity by cooking traditional foods reflective of your family’s lineage. Talk to your kids about where you come from and break out the family tree to illustrate your family history while reflecting on the broader meanings for this great country.

  • Make a memory. Digital cameras have greatly impacted the future of family photo albums. Commit not only to taking fun Fourth of July photos – but also to printing and saving them in an album. Let your kids take the photos and help you create the album or scrapbook. This simple activity will remain a valuable (and tangible) memory for years and years.

  • Don’t feel like staying in? Whether you head to the local park or you’re looking for a news-worthy shindig, grab a blanket, a camera and a cooler and share a wonderful evening with the kids in your life. Find an event in your area.
