Help: How to Organize an
Effective Day for Kids Committee
Behind every successful Day for Kids event is an effective event planning committee. The planning committee is the strength and support for pulling off a fun, safe event for your Club kids, their families and the community.
So how do you know when you have an effective planning committee? A useful committee is comprised of a diverse set of people, each with their own ways to contribute. Pick your committee with several factors in mind, including what types of ideas each person will bring to the table and their commitment to the event. Make sure to include Keystoners on your committee to take advantage of their input on what kids enjoy.
Your committee will also benefit from having members that are heavily involved in the community or who can offer connections to potential donors. Try to involve community organizations -- you can create key partnerships this way and get input from people who may have experience hosting large events.
Your first committee meeting will be one of the most important meetings. This meeting will define the committee’s roles and responsibilities as well as determine the type of event you will be planning. Break members into subcommittees to facilitate an easier workload and then discuss options for your event’s budget.
A good planning committee should also:
- Provide widespread support and attend the event
- Delegate work
- Help identify your target audience
- Help in establish the goals and objectives of your DFK event (are you trying to secure more members, create community awareness, etc.?)
- Create and control budget
- Generate media and community involvement
- Generate sponsorship, cultivate donors and secure vendors
