Keeping Kids Interested in School

The excitement of going back to school can often be attributed to the “new factor.” New teachers, friends, classes, school supplies and clothes can all add to the thrill of returning to the classroom. But what can you do when the euphoria of it all fades and kids become quickly disenchanted? Here are a few ways you can spend time with kids while keeping them interested in school.

Play games – Talk to your child about the subject he or she is struggling with. Do a little a research online for games that pertain to the subject matter. You can also create games that are modeled after popular game shows. Having trouble in history? Create a Jeopardy game. Having trouble with math? Create a Price Is Right game. You can always make learning fun and entertaining by creating games or puzzles that highlight the area your child is struggling with.

Rent or view online videos – Plan an afternoon when you and your child can surf the net and review educational videos. Web sites such as www.kidsknowit.com and http://www.neok12.com offer free videos in various subjects that are enjoyable and educational.

Provide moral support – Give your child a boost of confidence by recognizing and praising them for small accomplishments. Ask them to challenge themselves and try to do an even better job next time. Show them that they are a valuable part of your family. Provide them with incentives for doing well in school.

Help them with their homework – When kids see adults taking education seriously, they tend to mimic the example that is before them. Be there for kids. Ask them questions about their homework and future assignments. Show genuine interest in what they are studying.

Weekend field trip – Take time to visit a State attraction. If your child is studying animals, visit a local zoo. See first-hand what the animals your child is studying look like up close and personal.
